Free Standing Electric Fireplaces

by Gavin Heartlow

There is always at least one room in any home that isn’t quite as well served by the central heating system as it might be. In older and larger homes that room was frequently provided with a fireplace to make up the difference. But fireplaces require a lot of maintenance and making fires is also time consuming. In addition to that, the chimney acts as a vent which sucks the warm air right out of the room. The answer to these problems is an electric fireplace. A free standing electric fireplace can be put anywhere that there is an outlet to plug it into and will warm the room completely without the use of cordwood and chimney sweeps.

Electric fireplaces, not being anchored to a chimney or a vent, can be place in many imaginative locations in many different rooms. The only real restriction is that they not be placed near anything flammable such as curtains. They may be electric but making heat requires that they get hot. This gives the manufacturers of electric fireplaces a great deal of leeway in design. While these units are almost exclusively made of steel they can be decorated in any color. They can even be finished in the appearance of stone, brick, or wood. This means that the homeowner can basically color-coordinate his fireplace with his room’s decor. It need not have a rustic appearance at all.

Fireplaces tend to attract people to sit near them basking in their warmth. Given the free standing nature of the appliance there are even units that can be placed in the middle of a room and surrounded with seating. These are sometimes designed to resemble a fire pit or open hearth. Because there is no actual hearth, the fireplace can be moved around in the room as often as the homeowner desires. This is particularly useful when new furniture is purchased or if entertaining large numbers of people. In the worst case the electric fireplace can be unplugged and stored in a closet for the duration of the event. Flexibility is an electric fireplace’s middle name.
